The massive amount of air that turbines require for operation can introduce airborne contaminates causing a significant challenge in keeping the engine, particularly the rotor/ turbine blade in optimum operating condition. Proper inlet filtration is an important aspect in preventing decreased performance and even destruction of the gas turbine. Common consequences of inadequate inlet air filtration include:

Foreign Object Damage (FOD) Can cause

  • Extensive damage to the compressor and later parts in the air flow path 
  • Erosion: Can create stress concentrations that reduce the fatigue strength, thus leading to high cycle fatigue failures and reduction of
  • GT efficiency
  • Fouling: Can result in clearance changes, disruption of rotating balance, obstruction and plugging of flow paths, and reduced smoothness of rotating and stationary blade surfaces
  • Cooling Passage Plugging: Reduction/prevention of cooling efficiency leading to over-heating and failure
  • Particle Fusion: Can change turbine blade profile or block cooling passages and lead to thermal fatigue
  • Corrosion (cold and/or hot): Can result in the reduction of cross-sectional properties (cold) and/or oxidization of/on turbine blades, combustor liners, nozzles and transition pieces
